BJJ Instructor Toolbox: Building Martial Arts Successfully

Apr 19, 2024

Set your team up for success. Work ahead of the curve and create a way to offer consistent, successful classes by making sure your instructors have access to a wealth of resources.

Now that you’ve got a curriculum, what’s the most important part of how your academy runs class?

Do your classes start on time and have a consistent turn out? Is your instructor equipped to handle circumstances that may arise over the course of the hour?

What’s something you want all your coaches to know and do?

One of the key ways to make sure you’re growing your martial arts school in the right direction is to invest in your employees. This means spending extra time, energy or resources to help them achieve success.

Investing in your coaches early on is important because if they don’t feel valued at your martial arts academy, they will leave to find a place they do. In this scenario, you’re not there for them to serve you – you need to make sure that as a leader, you’re serving them. (link later to future blog)

Your coach may have a vast knowledge of Jiu Jitsu and great people skills, but they might need help with improving their time management.

Or, they might have a good handle on timing and class structure, but don’t teach the warmup or drills the same way each class.

We’re here to help you answer these questions and more with our BJJ Instructor Toolbox, helping you instructors teach a great Fundamentals class by covering everything from warm ups and flow work to drills, class structure, time management and more.

Everyone comes from different backgrounds and experience levels. Don’t just assume that all coaches will know what you’re thinking if you don’t actually tell them.

If you’re going to hold your coaches to one consistent standard, make sure they know what that standard is. It’s up to you to provide any tools they need in order to achieve this standard.

BJJ Instructor Toolbox Overview

At Easton, this Instructor Toolbox is something we provide every coach who works with us.

Along with having a strong understanding of our curriculum and culture by going through it themselves, this toolbox covers everything from how to start, build up and end a class – including the various levels of intensity along the way.

This is why we’ve developed a version to help your instructors coach a knock-out Fundamentals Class. Here’s what our BJJ Instructor Toolbox covers:

  • Warm Up
  • Live Training
  • Always Flow
  • Class Structure
  • Standing Drills
  • Ground Drills
  • Feet to Floor Flow
  • Time Management and Making Adjustments

With this starter Fundies collection, your coaches get access to useful content like Standing Drills, Ground Drills and Feet to Floor Flows to beef up their class and increase engagement.

Jiu Jitsu moves quickly as new techniques develop, new players emerge and the game evolves. If you have a core set of techniques in your fundamentals curriculum that teach the basics of Jiu Jitsu, you can add on and expand to your heart’s content in the advanced classes.

Aside from knowing the drills, flows and sequences, you’ll really want to emphasize the importance of how information gets communicated to students.

At Easton, we make sure to prioritize an inclusive culture and train our coaches on the importance of stewardship. Your coaches should teach in a way that puts students first.

These drills and flows are guidelines, but the important thing is to make sure you’re listening and communicating with your students to assess how they’re tracking. Prioritize clear and open communication between coaches and students so that progress can be effectively monitored and adjustments can be made as needed

The same way we prioritize open communication between coaches and students, we believe that clear communication between owners and coaches makes up a core component of a strong martial arts academy.

With our BJJ Instructor Toolbox, your team will feel aligned and supported in any way they need along their coaching journeys. You can help your coaches achieve success further with pre-recorded videos of each week’s technique.

By prioritizing your coach’s development through supplemental training, recordings or material like our BJJ Instructor Toolbox, you’ll create a culture that values higher knowledge, development and growth.
